Individual Note:
BARTLEY, NOAH- Noah Bartley and family came from Woodstock, Ontario in 1879. Part of the family travelled by the boat "Marquette" up the Assiniboine, and the others came by covered wagon from Winnipeg to Birtle.
Mr. Ben Dutton had already done some breaking for the Bartley family on the Wattsview plains on section 19-16-27. A log stable was built to house the animals which included those of Neil McKay, a son-in-law. During the first winter the family lived in a tent. A lightning storm later burned down the stable and the animals which were housed.
The home built of logs by Noah Bartley in those first years still stands and is in use. In the early days it was a haven for travellers who came by boat up the Assiniboine headed for Birtle ten miles away.
Grandfather Noah Bartley gave the land for the first log school built on the south-east corner of his farm and WALTER BARTLEY, a son, gave the land for the new school which was on the north-east corner of the same quarter section.
Before the school was built the Noah Bartley home was used for church services.
Noah Bartley (1828-1888) was buried in the first cemetary in Birtle on top of the hill. Later when a new cemetary was provided a memorial for him was placed in the new location where Mrs. Bartley was buried in 1924.
The next bit of history I will provide comes directly from the book "Wandering in Wattsview", a local history book which has histories of families and events in the Wattsview area:

NOAH BARTLEY-(by Grand-daughter Minnie Vant)

My grandfather, Noah Bartley, was born in Wiltshire, England. My grandmother was born in Carrisbrooke, Isle of Wright 1833. My grandfather and son George (my dad), came up by river boat in 1880. Later in the year, the rest of the family came by covered wagon, drawn by oxen from Winnipeg.
Grandfather Bartley settled on section S 19-16-27 in 1880, some of the land had been broken previous to this by Benjamin Dutton.
The first house was a log one on the hill above where the present house stands. The second house was also logs, and the logs were hauled from the Assiniboine valley. This house was later sided with lumber. There were eight rooms, it was heated by wood, later by coal. Iron pots and copper tea kettle were used. Good furniture. Oxen, then horses were used for farm work. A good vegetable garden was grown. A row of Maples was planted along the garden. Grain was first hauled to Moosomin then Birtle and Wattsview siding after the Grand Trunk railway went through.
My Grandfather gave land for the first log school and later was also a trustee.
My grandfather's home in the very early day was a halfway house for people who came up the Asiniboine by boat on their journey to Birtle. They also used to have church services in their home.
Grandfather is buried in the first cemetary in Birtle. My grandmother moved to Birtle with son Walter and myself, in 1913. She lived to the age of 92 and died in 1924.

WALTER BARTLEY-(by Mrs. Minnie Vant)
My uncle, Walter Bartley was born in Ontario and came with his parents to Wattsview in 1880 to settle Sec. 19-16-27. He worked with his father and later, farmed this land himself, after his father died. He bought NE 19-16-27 and farmed the three quarters.
When it was voted to build a new school, he donated land for the school. For many years he was a trustee and also Sec.-Treas. of the school board. He held office in the Agricultural Society, and was a councillor in Birtle Municipality. He grew grain, much of which was sold for seed grain.
He was married to Maude Randall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Randall. She passed away early in 1899.
Uncle Walter in 1913 sold the south half of his land to Carman Watt and other quarter to Roy Watt. He moved to Birtle, his mother lived with him until she died in 1924. I lived on the farm with them also after they moved to Birtle.
